Blackfriars Day Centre
A day centre for physically disabled young adults with moderate learning difficulties, ages 19-26 aiming to improve their
life skills, increase their community awareness and enhance independent living skills. The service assists with the young
adult’s career prospects as well as caring for their personal needs. The service support the transition from education to
adult services.
Blackfriars have linked up with Sutton Trust Community Group and use the facilities down at the Betty Rushton
Community Garden. On average they bring 8 clients a week which enables there clients to have somewhere to relax in a
warm, comfortable and quiet environment. With the added benefit of our on site classroom it enables them to come all
year round.
Bringing clients out into the community garden helps to increase their awareness and enables them to interact and work
alongside others outside the day centre environment. They learn not just how to plant flowers but what makes them grow.
What resources they need and with the specially designed raised beds for wheelchair users they can grow just about
anything.
